A Brief History

In 1893 The Louisville Medical College officially opened its doors at the corner of West Chestnut and First Street, and in 1922 changed its name to the University of Louisville School of Medicine. But from 1970 to 1977 the building remained abandoned until the physician community and the Medical Foundation purchased it on May 20, 1977. After years of neglect one of Louisville's hidden gems was saved from demolition. The preservation and renovation spanned 15 years and cost nearly $4 million dollars in capital campaign funds. The historic medical school became the Community Health Building on March 17, 1981 upon the official move-in of the Society and Foundation. In 2006 the name was changed once again to the Old Medical School Building.

The Foundation's Work Continues

The GLMS Foundation exists to continue the traditions of the medical society. One of the ways in which this is done is through the care and protection of the historic structure where Louisville's medical legacies were born. From here we sustain many programs that benefit the medical family, and the community at large. Our very successful international medical aid program, Supplies Over Seas, helps developing nations all over the world provide better medical care. We support these programs in part by offering the Old Medical School for rental as meeting place for all kinds of events. The Old Medical School is our place of origin, and the Foundation works to keep it alive.

Old Medical School Guardians

The Old Medical School cannot endure with just the efforts of the Foundation. We continually need the support of generous people who can help us keep this work moving ahead.
